If you’re pregant or thinking about having a baby, this clip shows how you can make your nursery ‘cleaner’ and greener in line with an organic lifestyle. Drawing on EWG’s research, remember that over 200 potentially toxic chemicals are now found in the cord blood of new babies. It is now suggested that this rise in exposure to toxic synthetic chemicals are causing the rapid rise in allergies, birth defects, and other childhood diseases and complications.
Key elements for a green nursery for your organic baby are:
- The paints you use on the walls. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) are present in conventional paint. VOC’s are dangerous compounds that can be released from the paint into the nursery environment. Not only will your baby then inhale small amounts, but so will you if you are the painter. Do your research and use VOC free paint such as a clay based paint.
- VOC’s are also found in carpets, curtains, other furniture and even clothing. Look for organic cotton clothing when buying clothes for your baby.
- Avoid buying plastic or metal toys. Plastic degrades over time, releasing potentially toxic or carcinogenic compounds. As babies tend to put everything in their mouths, you don’t want to add to their chemical exposure through the toys in the nursery. There are numerous companies that produce ‘green’ and safe toys for babies and children, made from natural materials.
- Breast-feeding is undoubtedly best for your baby, but if you have to bottle-feed, make sure your bottles are bisphenol-A free. Studies are coming out showing a link between bisphenol A and hormone disruption. Most supermarkets and chemists now sell bottles that don’t contain this, check the packaging or buy glass bottles.
