A Beginner’s Guide to Organic Gardening
This clip provides an introduction to the benefits of gardening generally, and then more specifically the benefits of choosing organic gardening techniques. Watch this video if you who haven’t gardened before, or if you are curious as to what gardening organically means.
Author and gardener, Jayson Patrick, gives a clear and gentle overview of the advantages of home-growing fruit, vegetables, herbs or flowers. The size of your plot doesn’t matter. Whether you’re growing herbs in container pots or wild flowers in an orchard, the advantages remain the same and include:
- Taking control of the foods we consume,
- Avoiding the use of harmful chemicals to benefit our health,
- Improving the environment, rather than harming it,
- Saving money through recycling and reducing food bills,
- Recycling household waste that doesn’t harm, or just add to landfill sites,
- Enhancing soil structure and soil fertility,
- Conserving water resources and reducing soil erosion,
- Preserving nutrients within the produce,
- Producing and saving heirloom seeds,
- Promoting a healthier lifestyle for you and your family,
- Increasing nutrients and tastiness of the food you eat,
- Having fun with your family,
- Attracting wildlife to your land.
This clip is rather longer than usual, so here are the timings for specific points:
- 1.25 mins for information on effects of pesticides on human health.
- 2.40 mins for an overview of organic agriculture.
- 4.15 mins for facts on the effects of genetically modified (GM) seeds and food.
This is an excellent clip to watch to gain an overall insight into why and how gardening organically improves your health, your garden and the environment. Simple changes can reap great rewards as part of an organic lifestyle.
