Flying the flag for organic fashion, Stella McCartney has remained true to her beliefs. The Stella McCartney brand is renowned for producing cruelty free, organic clothing. In this brief video Stella reveals her motivation and the ethics that have formed the bedrock of her career.

“Growing up on an organic farm, in the countryside, as a vegetarian, I already had my eyes opened to things around me.” explains Stella. Those early years provided Stella with the beliefs that have been intrinsic to her career. She won’t use fur or animal derived products in any of her clothing lines.

Although the fashion world is supposed to be forward looking, Stella finds it sad that the industry does not actually challenge or innovate within the production processes or with the materials and fabrics it uses. She hopes to encourage other designers to look for other ways of producing fashionable clothes. Using environmentally friendly fabrics and materials is part of this. Fashionistas will be happy to hear that you don’t have to sacrifice style in any way to deliver eco and green clothing, according to this hugely popular designer.

Over 50 million animals are killed each year for the fashion industry, says Ms McCartney. Clearly this has a significant impact on the environment. Inefficent use of land mass to farm these ‘fashion’ animals, water required to support rearing and processing the carcasses and the chemicals used in the tanneries. Fashion does not actually ‘need’ these animals. Fantastic clothes are being produced by designers who do care about the environment, the workforce and the customer.

Aside from Stella other innovative designers and design houses leading the eco chic clothing revolution include Natalie Portman, Ali Hewson (owner of Edun) and Katherine Hamnett among others. We find it greatly reassuring that more and more high-end and retail fashion designers are turning to sustainable and organic fabrics as the key materials for their collections.
