How to Grow Organic Tomatoes in Pots
Organic living is very much about using resources that are readily available. In this straightforward video by Iain McInnes learn three basic points to help you grow tomatoes in pots the organic way. Also, each tip will help you save money too. Living organically does not have to be living expensively!
The first point McInnes makes is to use your kitchen and garden waste to feed a compost bin or compost pit. This makes a lot of sense as what is so often discarded – vegetable peelings, coffee grinds, eggshells, leaves, grass clippings, ash and so on) can be easily turned into nutrient- rich compost for your organic garden. Setting up your own compost bin does not require much money and means that you’ll have free compost for years to come. (see organic gardening for more info on composting)
Secondly buy used pots, rather than brand new ones, from garden centres and save money. Alternatively convert old plastic tubs or buckets by cutting a hole in the bottom (to allow for drainage). Make sure you wash any used containers first.
Thirdly, be prepared to sacrifice one plant out of the crop for insects. If you see your tomato plants being nibbled by caterpillars, McInnes suggests simply moving them to a single plant and allow them to munch. Organic gardening is about living in harmony with nature, rather than battling against it. There is no need to use pesticides or insecticides (further reduce your expenditure too). If you have a problem with a particular insect, use the Internet to research how best to deal with it using non-toxic, organic methods.
